Sydney welcomes luxury liner

My Thoughts

I would love to go on a cruise however I know from
my whale watching experience the cruise would not be
very exciting from my cabin bed! Perhaps one day
I will get over sea sickness and be able to go on a cruise.
Until that day, I will just keep dreaming. I would love to
see inside this particular boat though.

THE Sun Princess superliner became the largest ship ever to sail under the Sydney Harbour Bridge this morning.Weighing 77,000 tonnes, 49m high and nearly three football fields in length, the luxury 1950-passenger superliner passed under Sydney's iconic bridge with just 2.5m to spare. Boasting a grand four-storey atrium, eight restaurants and cafes, four pools and five spas, the record-breaking vessel's voyage came to an end at Darling Harbour, having visited Seattle, Cook Islands and Dunedin.

The stylish superliner will now head to Brisbane for a dry docking, before returning to Sydney in early November where it will become the first premium cruise ship to be based in Australia year round.  "Australian passengers will be able to enjoy premium cruising year round, with more than 30 different cruises on offer," said acting managing director Dean Brown. "It's also fantastic news for Perth and Melbourne, with both cities set to welcome Sun Princess as the first superliner ever to be based in their ports."

Carrying 1950 passengers, Sun Princess will offer cruises from three homeports – Sydney, Melbourne and Fremantle – throughout 2008. The much-anticipated schedule includes the longest ever round-trip voyage from Australia – a 75-night Grand Pacific World Cruise.

Cruising to destinations such as Tahiti, Canada, Alaska, Japan, Russia, China and Vietnam, Sun Princess will follow in the wake of explorer Matthew Flinders who took two years to sail around Australia between 1801 and 1803, becoming the first person to circumnavigate and map the entire continent.

Mr Brown said the superliner would be joined over the 2008-09 summer by her sister ship, Dawn Princess, which will operate a season of cruises from Sydney, while Sun Princess sails from Melbourne.

The Sun Princess's first cruise, a 28-night circumnavigation of Australia, departs from Sydney on November 7.
