Intruder 'may have stalked family'

An intruder found in the bedroom of a five-year-old girl at Keperra early this morning could have been stalking the family for weeks, police say.

The little girl's 29-year-old mother disturbed the man when she was woken by a noise coming from her daughter's bedroom. The woman got out of bed and as she approached the girl's open door, a short distance from her own bedroom, she noticed a light on. Inside she was confronted by a man, believed to be in his 40s or 50s, who assaulted her before fleeing.

Detective Inspector Bob Hytch said the offender is believed to have fled the house on foot, via the front door, to a car in nearby Madsen Street.  Neighbours report hearing the sound of a speeding car, heading in the direction of Dawson Parade.  Police believe the offender had "done some preparation" before last night's break and enter, and want to speak to residents in the area who may have spotted a suspicious car in recent weeks.

The mother and child, who were the sole occupants of the Booker Street house, had only lived in the area for about six months.  Mr Hytch wouldn't comment on what the offender was doing when the child's mother found him, or how he entered the home in the first place.  He also wouldn't speculate on the possible motive, but said police had an open mind to all theories.  However he applauded the actions of the mother, and said she may have prevented the offender from carrying out his intended crime.

Today the child is being cared for by grandparents while her mother assists police.  The girl was not injured in the incident, and while the mother was assaulted, she did not require medical attention.  Mr Hytch said the woman was tired and "very shaken up".  She described the man as having a very thin, pointy face.  He was about 180cm tall and wearing a beanie and dark clothing.

Police have established a major incident investigation room to handle new leads.  Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
