Plastic, not so fantastic

My thoughts... Ok so now we shouldnt drink water in clear plastic bottles?
Could this be a glass manufacturer trying to scare us? Maybe not... but there's
always something to be thinking about with our health. Ignorance is bliss!

Looking into it ... scientists are researching the health risk
posed by commonly used transparent plastics.
October 30, 2007 - 10:01AM

A chemical found in plastics used for everything from water bottles to dental fillings poses a serious health risk, environmentalists and researchers say, although the jury has yet to deliver a final verdict.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is added to hard, clear polycarbonate plastics like those used in reusable water bottles and baby bottles, as well as the resins lining food cans and in some dental amalgams and sealants. Polycarbonate is identified by the number 7 inside the recycling symbol found on the plastic. About 95 per cent of number 7 plastics contain BPA, according to Aaron Freeman, policy and campaign director at Environmental Defence, a Canadian health and environment group.

Research on lab animals has linked the chemical to changes to the genital tract, prostate enlargement, declined testosterone, pre-cancerous breast cells, prostate cancer, early puberty in females and hyperactivity.

Studies have suggested that BPA acts as an endocrine disrupter, which means that it can mimic or disrupt estrogen, interfering with the hormone system's normal functioning.

"These are the things that interfere with the natural development processes in our bodies," said Freeman, "the switches that tell our body when to develop certain types of systems."

Research done in the late 1990s at Cleveland's Case Western Reserve University found that polycarbonate plastic can leach low levels of BPA when washed with harsh chemicals, Freeman said, but newer research by Environmental Health Perspectives also found that while heating or harsh washing increased leaching, it also happens in new bottles.

BPA isn't biocumulative or persistent, so it doesn't last in the body longer than 24 hours, Freeman said. Environmental Defence has done four rounds of tests for chemical accumulation in the bodies of high profile Canadians, including politicians. The most recent round of testing found BPA in the subjects' bodies.

"What that means is there's chronic exposure," Freeman said, "and we found it at levels that were producing serious health risks in animal studies."
The effects of BPA on human health are examined in amounts as low as parts per trillion.

With chemicals like BPA, the length and timing of the dosage appears to be more important than the size, Freeman said. Exposure in utero and in infants and children is of particular concern, he said, because the chemical is thought to affect developmental processes.

The possible effect of very small doses of BPA was explained to him using the metaphor of a ship, he said: you can build the strongest hull you like, but if your navigation system is just slightly off, you won't get to your destination.

BB shake up

My thoughts... ok... so this semester we have touched on visual literacy again at uni.
What is this picture saying? Well, to me, it says that Kyle is the man... he runs it and Jackie well
she is there on the sideline... not that important.  Her colour of clothings says the same thing. Kyle, go away and take BB with you!

GRETEL Killeen has been dumped from Big Brother as Ten seeks to revamp the struggling show by introducing new hosts, radio duo Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O.

"Working on Big Brother has been an extraordinary, challenging and rewarding experience," Killeen said.  "I'm really proud of what we've achieved but I now have the seven-year itch and am busting to get on with a million new things, including my first feature film, which we're shooting in the new year."

After seven years, the show is in dire need of a change. The 2007 series was criticised for its boring and predictable housemates, resulting in poor ratings and speculation the show might be axed. But producers Endemol Southern Star have confirmed the show will return in 2008 in a "tighter, re-energised format".

Jackie O wants 'shake-up'

It will again be filmed at Dreamworld on the Gold Coast.

"I would like to see them shake it up, especially with the contestants because I think everybody is sick of the same old contestants going in," Jackie O said.  "It actually gets really boring after a while.  "As a fan, I have always wanted a bigger variety of people in there and also to push the contestants more."

Her co-host has a similar view and speaks from experience. Sandilands was a contestant on Celebrity Big Brother in 2002 and was a guest in the house for a weekend this year, although he had to leave early because he suffered from a migraine. Sandilands wants 'grumpy old men'
"I want that conflict, that real sense of drama rather than that frat house drama that we've seen over the last few years," Sandilands, who is also a judge on Ten's Australian Idol, said. "It is time that we mix it up a little bit.  "We will still have young, fun people in there but the whole house won't be full of 20-something losers. "I would like the old grumpy man that hates loud noise and hates young people in there."

Both Sandilands and Jackie O praised Killeen on her hosting of the show, saying they were big fans of her TV style.

Ten will be hoping for a big boost in ratings with the revamped show.

Its time to go... Gretel Killeen!

My thoughts... Hmmm I think its time for BB to say goodnight and good bye! If not, then choose more exciting and educated people to go into the house. I dont always watch it as most of the time its just crap! It would depend on the type of talk that the house mates chat about for me to go back to watching it. I think Gretel has done a fantastic job and deserves better than this. If they think ppl are going to watch it more with Kyle and Jackie O they should think again... with Kyle hosting it, I will never EVER watch BB again. He is a rude and obnoxious man!!! For me... its time to go... Big Brother!!!

In the beginning ... Gretel Killeen launching the 2005 series.
Big Brother Australia host Gretel Killeen has been axed after seven years as the shows new producers begin planning to revamp the show.

She will be replaced by Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O - an established radio partnership.

Kyle is a judge on Australian Idol and has been a celebrity housemate, as well as staying in the house as a guest briefly earlier this year. Ironically for many critics that was the last straw after a couple of years of very repetitive series that seemed to follow the same format - with the same twists - each year.

The show will return in 2008 with a "tighter, re-energised format" under the control of new executive producers.

It is still not known whether Mike Goldman, Fitzy or Bree will be spared the axe.

Kicked, Bitten and Scratched

This looks like an interesting read for the holidays!

[Cover]"Journalist Amy Sutherland takes readers on a fascinating tour of this boot camp of a school, with its nearly all female student body and teaching zoo of two hundred animals. Over the course of a year, Sutherland follows students as they touch their first animal (a tarantula), learn how to kill pigeons with their hands to feed the birds of prey, take the emu for a stroll, and rush to the emergency room with a bad animal bite or two. EATM pushes the limits of all enrolled as they master animal anatomy and hundreds of Latin species names in between hosing poop out of the big cats' cages and making sure Zulu the mandrill gets his morning juice in a paper cup. If the students survive the grueling twenty one month program, they will have essentially learned to talk to the animals."--BOOK JACKET.

Reading rocks

For kids ages 7-12
We realize learning to read can be hard. A child can feel completely isolated and alone in their struggles with reading and want to give up. But we all know quitting is not the answer. With the help of parents, teachers, and research-based instruction, these struggling readers can learn to read and succeed.

Reading...

Reading aloud is probably the single best activity for putting a child on the road to becoming a reader. But parents can do even more to ensure a good start – you can help kids crack the code of letters and sounds.

Thunderstorms wreak havoc

My thoughts

The rain bucketed down last night!  The thunder was as loud as you could get it and made us jump. I thought I heard hail but it was only really hard rain. The power went out for only a few minutes!!! I went to get the rechargable torch... it wasnt working even thought it was fully charged!!! Candles... where are the candles... Oh god where did I put the lighter? So now I realise that I need to have a black out kit!!! LOL Luckily, the power came back on and we could resume watching Kath and Kim! That helped Reuben not focus on the storm. He still really is not good with them. This morning I woke at 5am, thinking that I should go for a walk... well I was halted in my tracks when I opened the door to let Gypsy out. It was raining and storming. So I went back to bed and slept til 7.30am! If I didnt have uni stuff to do I would be back in bed reading... its that kind of weather!

Traffic grinds to a halt southbound on the Pacific Motorway as a result of flooding at Loganholme.
Georgia Waters and AAP | October 29, 2007 - 6:31AM

Thousands of homes have been left without power, and commuters face lengthy delays on the way to work as storms have caused havoc across South-East Queensland.

A section of the Pacific Motorway at Loganholme has flooded and trains on the Beenleigh line were briefly interupted because of a power outage.

A Police Media spokeswoman said continuing rain was hampering efforts to clear the motorway. Two trucks were currently trying to pump water away from the motorway, she said.It is believed a blocked drain is stopping floodwaters from draining away from the road."It's a flood plane out there," she said.Significant delays were expected to continue for at least several hours, she said.Only one southbound lane of the motorway is open.

Energex spokesman Graham Metcalf said blackouts were widespread."We have had about 35,000 homes and businesses throughout South-East Queensland that lost power throughout the evening as those line of storms rolled through,'' he told the ABC."We had thousands of lightning strikes as the storms hit South-East Queensland.''Mr Metcalf said more than 100 calls for help were made to the State Emergency Service (SES) overnight.SES spokesman Eddie Bennett said most of the damage was just south of Brisbane."We had jobs in Beaudesert, Beenleigh, Logan, Gold Coast area,'' he told the ABC."Trees down, damaged roofs, water into houses.''

A coastal wind warning has also been issued for Cape Moreton to Coolangatta, with northeast to northwest winds expected at 25 to 30 knots.Three-metre waves in open waters are also expected.

A day with Pheonix in early July

On Saturday, after lunch, a lady came to get the bed I was giving away. She
turned up without anyone to help. I went and asked Dave and Mandy if they
would mind helping me.  The bed was half way out by the time we realised
that it was Phoenix coming out from the drawer space. He was so freaked out
he rang out and down the drain. There was nothing I could do. Nothing
anyone could do. I kept going back to the drain and calling him but there
was nothing. At 2.30 I thought I would go and see Allison and thought I
would check the drain before I left. There he was. I sat there calling him
hoping he would jump out but he either didn't want to or couldn't. Mandy
saw me and came over with another neighbour, Anne from the cul-de-sac. She
is very butch looking. Phoenix ran back into the drain when they came over
and wouldn't come back out. Anne was able to pick up the drain and open it.
She hopped in it and tried to look. Mandy did too. Finally, Mandy went and
got her torch. I jumped into the drain and here was Phoenix sitting in the
middle of the drain (probably about the middle of the road). He wouldn't
come. I even through in some chicken and he wouldn't budge. So Anne and I
decided to wait and hoped he would come out but after 45mins but he didn't.
I finally got an idea to put Gypsy in and see if he would come out to her.
He still wouldn't come out. Gypsy could smell the chicken and went in and
ate it. That helped her overcome the fear I guess. I didn't think she would
go back in all on her own. Off she went and sniffed Phoenix and licked him.
He stood up and started to follow her out. He got to the entrance and
wouldn't come out any further. I played with a lead to coax him out.
Finally he came close enough so I could grab him. He was so freaked out
though, he scratched me. Reuben took him in the house and he has been so
quiet ever since. So, there you go. Gypsy saved Phoenix! She is our hero!!!
I bet Phoenix thinks that too!

Creation

Creation

On the first day, God created the dog and said: "Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. For this, I will give you a life span of twenty years." The dog said: "That's a long time to be barking. How about only ten yearsand I'll give you back the other ten?" So God agreed.

On the second day, God created the monkey and said: "Entertain people, do tricks, and make them laugh. For this, I 'll give you a twenty-year life span." The monkey said: "Monkey tricks for twenty years? That's a pretty long timeto perform. How about I give you back ten like the dog did?"
And God agreed.

On the third day, God created the cow and said: "You must go into the field with the farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have calves and give milk to support the farmer's family For this, I will give you a life span of sixty Years."
The cow said: "That's kind of a tough life you want me to live for sixty
years. How about twenty and I'll give back the other forty?" And God agreed again.
On the fourth day, God created man and said: "Eat, sleep, play, marry and enjoy your life. For this, I'll give you twenty years."
But man said: "Only twenty years ? Could you possibly give me my twenty, the forty the cow gave back, the ten the monkey gave back, and the ten the dog gave back; that makes eighty, okay?"  "Okay," said God, "You asked for it."
So that is why for our first twenty years we eat, sleep, play and enjoy ourselves. For the next forty years we slave in the sun to support our family. For the next ten years we do monkey tricks to entertain the grandchildren. And for the last ten years we sit on the front porch and bark at everyone.
Life has now been explained to you.

India recalls condoms!

My Thoughts

Wow, they give them away free in India. Great idea!!! Australia needs to

take this idea on board to stop unwanted pregnancies and STDs!

October 24, 2007 - 6:11AM

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa - South Africa is recalling five million locally manufactured condoms after tens of thousands failed an air burst test, the Ministry of Health says.

The latest recall - which involves condoms distributed free of charge by the government - comes on the heels of a scandal in which the local company Zalatex in August was found to have bribed an official of the South African Bureau of Standards to approve defective condoms. Then, the government called for 20 million condoms to be recalled or held at the factory. Only 12 million have been recovered.

The recalls are a blow to the country's campaign to encourage condom use to prevent AIDS. South Africa has 5.5 million AIDS victims - the highest number in the world - with 900 people dying per day. In separate tests following news of the bribery, at least five batches of condoms from Kohrs Medical Supplies, a South African company, failed an air burst test, a ministry statement said. Condoms are distributed in boxes of 6,000.

The government recalled five million condoms supplied by Kohrs, which was not implicated in any bribery.

"We appeal to the public and all partners involved in the distribution and promotion of the use of condoms to assist with the recall," the statement said.

Recalling the condoms raised questions about the competence of the Bureau of Standards, which is supposed to ensure that the contraceptives are up to World Health Organisation standards.

Condoms supplied by two other companies passed the air burst test, it said.

The ministry said it was cancelling its contract with Kohrs, which was to supply nearly 64 million condoms. The Zalatex contract was cancelled in August. The government had contracted seven companies to supply 425 million condoms in the year ending in February.

Two weeks ago, about 100,000 unused Kohrs condoms were found dumped near eastern Durban city. Police are investigating.

Kids txt 4 free condoms

My Thoughts

I say better safe than very very sorry! I would rather my
daughter and son be protected than not. If they want to
have sex, they will so why not make sure they are protected.
No one likes to think that their kids are sexually active as we
know how emotional a sexual relationship is and how unprepared
teenagers are for that level of emotion and experience. If you say
NO, then they will just go and do it! So why not sit down, tell them
how you feel, why you feel, give them the condoms and hopefully they
will make the right choice and if they don't then at the very least, they
will come home not pregnant and without a STD! If parents aren't willing
to sit down and share with their teenager then at least the teens are
being helped to stay safe by this promotion!!!

Queensland teenagers celebrating the end of high school will be able to order free condoms by text message as part of a national sexual health campaign.

Marie Stopes International provides sexual and reproductive healthcare services in a number of countries, and for the next month will operate the SMS service to coincide with Schoolies celebrations.

The organisation's acting CEO Jill Michaelson said there was still a stigma amongst young people associated with buying condoms from supermarkets and pharmacies. Statistics show about 20 per cent of young people have had unprotected sex.

"A lot of young people are quite self-conscious about buying condoms and some just don't have the money to do it," Ms Michaelson said.

By sending their details to 19-SEX-TXT, young people will receive two condoms in a discreet white envelope - just in time for Schoolies Week. "We're coming into a period where young people are finishing school and wanting to have fun, and we want to make sure they have a way of being informed about appropriate sexual practices."As we know, most teenagers these days use text messaging to communicate, so we felt this was a really good way to get through to that particular demographic."

Family Planning Queensland spokesperson Vivienne Wynter applauded the initiative and said it was essential to explore other innovative ways to distribute safe sex messages."There are about 20 per cent of young people who are reporting having unprotected sex," Ms Wynter said."The good news is that the vast majority of them are protecting themselves, but there is still a percentage that isn't always."

Queensland has one of the highest rates of HIV infection increase in the country, and the number of sexually transmitted infections is rising across the board. The latest statistics show that more than half of the 47,000 national notifications of Chlamydia infection in 2006, about half were in the 15 to 24 age group."The tourist areas of the Gold Coast and far-north Queensland have slightly higher rates of infection, which is consistent with the theory that sometimes people engage in risky sexual behaviour when they're on holidays."

Combine young people, alcohol, warm weather and the beach - it doesn't take a rocket scientist to calculate the end result.

Cousins unlikely to return to AFL fold

My Thoughts

This guy has a problem! Why is he allowed to go back to play football?

Is he really that good? I wish these celebrities would get there act together

and think of the kids that are watching them, soaking it all in! I hated the smirk

on his face when he returned from his first time in rehab. Obviously, these rehab

places need to stop letting people out before they are really ready. However, people

make their own choices and who can stop a person from self destructing? Only themselves!

Drug arrest: Ben Cousins (File photo)

By Laine Clark   October 23, 2007 11:45am

Article from: AAP

BEN Cousins is unlikely to play in the AFL again, high-profile Brisbane Lions coach Leigh Matthews says.

The Brownlow medallist was dumped by West Coast last Wednesday, a day after being charged with possessing a diazepam tablet without a prescription.

The former West Coast captain was also charged with refusing to take a driver drug test, after being pulled over for allegedly driving erratically.

On Friday, police said they made a mistake when they laid the drug charge - and they formally dropped it in Perth Magistrates Court yesterday because diazepam is prohibited only in injectable liquid form.

Matthews - a four-time AFL premiership-winning player and coach - said he could not see a way back to the AFL for the premiership-winning midfielder.

"I would say it is very unlikely, for obvious reasons," he said.

"(But) who's got a crystal ball? I'm one of 16 clubs. I can't talk for the other clubs."

Matthews said the AFL's image "obviously has" taken a battering and he could understand a parent of a potential draftee expressing concerns over the possibility of their child joining West Coast.

"The world is about perception and reality and sometimes perception is what we go on because we don't know reality," he said.

"I've got no idea what happens at the Eagles because we are not there. But you can understand that thought being expressed because the perception is something that we all have to cope with."

Cousins, 29, is expected to return to California soon for a second stint in drug rehabilitation.

Eagles chief executive Trevor Nisbett said last week that there was no chance of Cousins playing for the Eagles again.

Even if he wanted to enter the draft system, Cousins would need the permission of the AFL because he has been deregistered as a player.

Sydney welcomes luxury liner

My Thoughts

I would love to go on a cruise however I know from
my whale watching experience the cruise would not be
very exciting from my cabin bed! Perhaps one day
I will get over sea sickness and be able to go on a cruise.
Until that day, I will just keep dreaming. I would love to
see inside this particular boat though.

THE Sun Princess superliner became the largest ship ever to sail under the Sydney Harbour Bridge this morning.Weighing 77,000 tonnes, 49m high and nearly three football fields in length, the luxury 1950-passenger superliner passed under Sydney's iconic bridge with just 2.5m to spare. Boasting a grand four-storey atrium, eight restaurants and cafes, four pools and five spas, the record-breaking vessel's voyage came to an end at Darling Harbour, having visited Seattle, Cook Islands and Dunedin.

The stylish superliner will now head to Brisbane for a dry docking, before returning to Sydney in early November where it will become the first premium cruise ship to be based in Australia year round.  "Australian passengers will be able to enjoy premium cruising year round, with more than 30 different cruises on offer," said acting managing director Dean Brown. "It's also fantastic news for Perth and Melbourne, with both cities set to welcome Sun Princess as the first superliner ever to be based in their ports."

Carrying 1950 passengers, Sun Princess will offer cruises from three homeports – Sydney, Melbourne and Fremantle – throughout 2008. The much-anticipated schedule includes the longest ever round-trip voyage from Australia – a 75-night Grand Pacific World Cruise.

Cruising to destinations such as Tahiti, Canada, Alaska, Japan, Russia, China and Vietnam, Sun Princess will follow in the wake of explorer Matthew Flinders who took two years to sail around Australia between 1801 and 1803, becoming the first person to circumnavigate and map the entire continent.

Mr Brown said the superliner would be joined over the 2008-09 summer by her sister ship, Dawn Princess, which will operate a season of cruises from Sydney, while Sun Princess sails from Melbourne.

The Sun Princess's first cruise, a 28-night circumnavigation of Australia, departs from Sydney on November 7.

Rusty pipe supports NSW highway

Highway / Jeff Herbert

My thoughts

OH MY GOD... have people not learnt? What is going on here?
They are putting people in danger! I cant believe that this is like this!
Mind you, I should believe it as its council!!! I thought we were meant
to learn from our mistakes? Hmmmm maybe not!!! If someone dies, this
council should be held responsible!

October 24, 2007 01:00amArticle from: The Daily Telegraph

IT is enough to make any motorist shiver - a rusty metal support props up a crumbling section of a busy road directly above a culvert.  Just 10 minutes' drive from where a section of the Old Pacific Highway at Somersby collapsed during the June storms, killing a family of five, The Daily Telegraph can reveal another stretch being kept together by what looks like a makeshift repair.

The patch-up is on the side of the Central Coast Highway leading to Kariong and has been done with a metal "Acro prop" which is now severely rusted. As the images show, the crumbling sandstone wall is above a culvert, which allows a waterfall to pass under the road and become a tributary of Coorumbine Creek.

Umina resident Edward James uncovered the work after spending several months examining local culverts and ditches following the Somersby road collapse. Adam Holt, 30, his partner Roslyn Bragg, 29, their daughters Madison, 2, and Jasmine, 3, and Ms Bragg's nephew Travis Bragg, 9, died when a giant fissure opened in front of their car on June 8.

Yesterday, several engineers said the Central Coast Highway repair would require a proper site assessment to determine whether or not it was dangerous. Gosford City Council said the road was a State Government responsibility, and that details of the damage had been passed on to the Roads and Traffic Authority.

"We've taken some photos and so we've sent if off to the RTA for action," Mayor Jim Macfadyen said. But an RTA spokesman assured residents the culvert and the road above it were "sound and in no danger of collapse". He said a routine maintenance inspection had identified the "minor repairs" required to the sandstone brickwork and the temporary repairs were put in place until more permanent ones could be organised. "These repairs will be completed in the near future," the spokesman said. "The RTA has a rigorous inspection regime for all its structures, including stormwater culverts. "The missing bricks and the support in the sandstone brick facing are not part of the culvert, are not structural and do not bear weight. "The brickwork is a cover to protect the slope between the road and the top of the culvert from the effects of the weather."

Anna Coren praises Chaser 'mates'

The Chaser / Supplied

By Mike Bruce  October 24, 2007 12:05am

ANNA Coren loves The Chaser's War on Everything.

Every Wednesday, she is right there with 1.5 million others watching the irreverent ABC funnymen mock her show, her brand of current affairs and her."Oh yeah," she says deliberately. "I think what they do is really good. I think they're talented and I think they're very funny and I enjoy watching them send us up." Coren even counts the comics among her friends. She sounds almost proud when recounting she was one of the more hardcore revellers at The Chaser's recent wrap party.

'Okay' with attacks on Today Tonight

"Those guys happen to be mates of mine. They don't attack me personally, they attack the show, they attack the genre and they attack me (as the host). That's fine," she says. Coren says she is neither scared nor upset by the broadsides fired during their segments, What We Learned From Current Affairs This Week including The Anna Coren Segue. She watches partly out of curiosity about how they will manage to craft yet another slight about Today Tonight. "No truly. I don't (have any fear). I just always wonder what they will come up with. "I was speaking to one of them the other day and they were like, 'Anna, where's the material? Come on, give it to us, we're running out here'." "I'm not precious. You have to take it as a form of flattery if they're paying you that much attention and having you on their show. "I should be on their bloody payroll."

Coren's show 'an abomination'

Chaser Chas Licciardello says his crew like Coren, but maintain their rage for the show. "In all our dealings with Anna she's been a genuinely nice, sweet person," he said.. "But the show she hosts is an abomination and should be eliminated for the good of humanity." Coren concedes their acerbic parody of the genre is "sometimes" justified and she doesn't "really have a problem with it". But deep down you sense that the weekly blows The Chaser throws could well be hurtful to her.

'Wants to be proud of Today Tonight'

When she took over TT from Naomi Robson early this year, she ambitiously stated - as did Ray Martin before her when he returned to A Current Affair - that she wanted a show to be proud of.  Ask Coren if she is enjoying the TT hosting role and the ambiguity and hesitancy may speak volumes: "Yeah, no, I am, I am ... yeah, no, it's all going well. "And yeah, no, it's good." And is she proud of what her show has become? "The stories I do I am proud of, the interviews I do I am proud of ... I make sure the stuff I do personally I am proud of."

'Chipping away' at more serious journalism

In terms of injecting her brand of more serious journalism into TT, she says, "We're getting there" and "chipping away".
She points to interviews with heavy-hitting politicians and serious figures such as anti-Islamic feminist Ayaan Hirsi Ali. "It's an evolving process. My background is news ... I would love to make the program a bit more newsy and I think we are slowly doing that. "We've had the PM on at least half a dozen times and we had Kevin Rudd on, and (we're) doing stories that matter to me. "You have to do it gradually."

Proud of journalism career

Coren does get upset, though, at media commentators dismissing her journalistic experience and painting her with the tabloid brush. The Australian's Amanda Meade said earlier this year: "If Coren thought she could hang on to her journalistic credibility and host Seven's TT, she was seriously misled." Coren counters: "I certainly know what I've achieved in my career. "I think when people ... wipe out what I have done in the past, that's when I have a bit of an issue. "I certainly know what I was doing the past couple of years.
"I certainly think the stuff that I do, the stories, the interviews I conduct, have integrity and credibility."

Can be both 'Baghdad and boob-jobs'

Despite TT's tabloid recipe working well with viewers - it rated 1.354 million last week about 207,000 above ACA - Coren believes there is room to take the show further upmarket, provided it retains a good mix. Producer Phil Goyen says: "I don't understand why it has to be one or the other, either Baghdad or boob-jobs - it can be both." Coren says: "I do think it's workable and I have always said if the show has a staple it's about getting the mix right. "You need that variety, that light and shade."

Melissa Etheridge - Ive loved you before

This song says so much to me. It makes me wonder if Brad and I have known each other before, in another time. I feel like I have known Brad for so long yet its only been 2 and half months. Brad feels the same... maybe this answers our questions.

Crazy John's founder dies, aged 42

This man looks so young and fit. How can this happen? What is the deal with this?
Did he look after himself? Was he under too much stress? My heart goes out to

Crazy John's founder John Ilhan, who died suddenly on Tuesday of a heart attack, will be remembered as a rags-to-riches migrant who gave generously back to the community.

Representatives from politics, business, sport and religion have paid tribute to the 42-year-old mobile phone entrepreneur who collapsed and died on Tuesday morning while walking near his home in the Melbourne bayside suburb of Brighton.

The father-of-four was one of Australia's richest men, amassing a personal fortune of $310 million since launching his mobile phone retail chain in 1991.

He was named the 126th richest man in Australia in this year's Business Review Weekly top 200 rich list.

As tributes flowed for the businessman, the company's managing director Brendan Fleiter told AAP it was a "pretty sad day".

He learned of Mr Ilhan's death at 8.30am (AEST) when he received a call from Mr Ilhan's wife, Patricia.

"She's obviously very shocked as is everybody," Mr Fleiter said, with a note of disbelief. "He has four young children."

Mr Fleiter said he last spoke to Mr Ilhan on Monday afternoon. He had not been unwell, Mr Fleiter said, but was a picture of health."The guy was fit and healthy ... he had a gym at his house."

Mr Fleiter described his boss as a man who was generous with his employees and the wider community, including those less fortunate than himself.  He was also a fair and caring boss. "He was fair, he was passionate, he was driven, he was demanding, and caring," Mr Fleiter said.

A close friend who spent family holidays with Mr Ilhan, Grocon property developer Daniel Grollo, said his friend was an "incredibly inspirational guy who gave a lot back to the community".  He was a "self-made guy who achieved a hell of a lot", Mr Grollo said.

Prime Minister John Howard also paused to pay his respects to the mobile phone magnate.  "If the country is kind to you and allows you to make a lot of money, you should give it back," Mr Howard said. "And he understood that Australian way and that's why it's especially sad that we've lost him."

Victorian Premier John Brumby remembered Mr Ilhan as a successful businessman and philanthropist.  "He was a great example of an Australian success story, someone who arrived here as a migrant ... and became a very, very successful individual, successful in business and successful in the community."

Mr Ilhan was born in Turkey and migrated with his parents at the age of five to Australia, where he grew up in the working class Melbourne suburb of Broadmeadows.

He was renowned for his support of charities including homeless children's organisation Kids Under Cover, the Royal Children's Hospital, the Lighthouse Foundation, the Shane Warne Foundation and St Vincent De Paul, among others.

Last year, he established the Ilhan Food Allergy Foundation with his wife, after the couple discovered their daughter Jaida suffered a peanut allergy.  He was also a supporter and sponsor of the Richmond Football Club.  The AFL club was among many organisations to express its sympathies.

The Islamic Council of Victoria also paid tribute to one of its most valued members.  "His was an inspiring Australian story, the son of Turkish migrants whose talent and hard work made him one of Australia's most successful businessmen," said Islamic Council of Victoria president Ramzi Elsayed.

In an interview recorded last month and broadcast on Monday night on Channel Seven's Today Tonight, Mr Ilhan said he was traumatised by the death of his elder brother Gerald 10 years ago.  "When my brother passed away I struggled, I was so sad, so traumatised by the whole experience, I didn't go to work for three months," he said.  "I just started praying every night and that's what got me through it.  "Until I started praying I couldn't get through it.  "I'd collapse in the shower and cry like a baby, I'd drive my car and cry like a baby."

Mr Ilhan also said he spent the first five years of his mobile phone business spending "all day, all night in the shop worrying about every cent", he said.  Crazy John's has more than 120 retail stores across Australia employing over 700 staff.

Mr Ilhan is survived by his wife Patricia and their four children - daughters Jaida, Hannah and Yasmin, and eight-month-old son Aidan.

AUSTRALIAN sexpot Sophie Monk is starring in a new spicy, bare it all ad campaign to persuade people to "kick their meat habit"

The campaign, which promotes vegetarianism, features a naked Monk lying on a bed of crimson chilli peppers.

The tagline reads: "Spice Up Your Life. Go Vegetarian."

The campaign was organised by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and the former Bardot singer, turned Hollywood actress, said cutting meat out of her diet had improved her quality of life.

The 28-year-old blonde said she was also disturbed to learn the pain suffered my animals raised for human consumption.

"There's no doubt in my mind that going vegetarian has made me feel better not only physically but also because I learned about the suffering of animals who are raised and killed for food," Monk said.

"I feel good knowing that I'm not contributing to that."

Monk quit meat when she was a teenager.

The actress and singer has no problem at dinner time when she sits down with Benji Madden, her fiance and member of US punk band Good Charlotte.

Madden is also a vegetarian.

Monk's career has taken off since moving to the US in 2005, with roles in box office hits Date Movie and the Adam Sandler comedy Click.

Owen Wilson 'falls off wagon'

Wilson Speaks Up

My thoughts

I would not trade places with any of these actors and so called rich "happy" people. I think they dont know what happiness is or how to find it. After all, they are only human and they probably thought that once they were rich they would be happy... but happiness comes from within not from money or people.

OWEN Wilson's recovery has suffered a setback after he went on a massive drinking binge.

The You, Me and Dupree star - who was taken to hospital with depression and reported alcohol abuse after a suicide attempt in August - was seen drinking heavily at a Santa Monica hotel recently.

"Owen arrived with a friend about 10pm and requested the private library room," hotel guest Jamie Brandt told Life and Style Weekly magazine.

"He looked like he'd already been drinking. He was stumbling when he came in and literally falling down when he left."

Owen's representative denies the 38-year-old actor was drunk, but another witness said: "They had bottle service and were drinking vodka.

"Owen got so drunk, he stumbled when he went to leave. He could hardly walk."

The Night at the Museum star was admitted to hospital in August after slashing his wrists. He was reported to be suffering from severe depression and binging on drugs and alcohol, claims which were strongly denied.

A source said: "Owen's breakdown was treated as a mental health problem as opposed to a substance-abuse issue. So Owen's goal wasn't to sober up, it was to feel better about himself."

Nicole Kidman piles on the kilograms for new movie role

HOLLYWOOD actress Nicole Kidman has begun gaining weight - not because she's pregnant, but for her next movie.

The 40-year-old Australian movie star has already added 4.5kg to her svelte frame and plans to double her weight gain in coming weeks before she starts filming The Reader.

"She is naturally very slim and loves to run and swim so she is always very toned," an unnamed close friend of Kidman's told The Mail on Sunday newspaper.

"The part she plays demands that she gets fatter throughout the movie as her character slips into middle age.

"Nicole was originally planning to use prosthetics but was told by the director, Stephen Daldry, that it would be more realistic if she gained the weight."

Kidman is following in the footsteps of fellow actress Renee Zellweger, who packed on more than 13kg to play Bridget Jones in two movies by chowing down on pizza, peanut butter sandwiches and fast food.

Kidman's new diet includes drinking daily protein shakes and eating carbohydrates with every meal.

"She has been eating about four meals a day," the friend said.

"It's not unusual to see here work her way through a big plate of pasta, with bread and then a dessert.

"She's having to gorge herself.

"She has quite enjoyed gaining the first 4.5kg and has been having lots of her favourite puddings as well as chocolate."

And it seems as though Kidman is happy with her more rounded look and has been buying bigger clothes.

"Nicole loves her new bosom but she is finding eating so much makes her lethargic and sleepy," the friend said.

"She's usually running on adrenaline and has to be reminded to eat a meal. Now, she's eating four and sometimes five small meals a day."

Kidman plays Hanna Schmitz in The Reader, which delves into the emotional repercussions of the Holocaust in post-war Germany.

Hugh Jackman casino series Viva Laughlin dumped

Hugh Jackman / file

HUGH Jackman's new American television program Viva Laughlin has been dumped after only two episodes - throwing a spanner in the works for new Channel Nine boss David Gyngell.

Gyngell had high expectations for the musical drama and rescheduled the station's guide to include it, creating a once-a-week, $5 million version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire to lead into the series.

Viva Laughlin, which was universally panned by critics and did not fare well in the ratings when it premiered in the US last week, was officially cancelled by American television network CBS early this morning.

The show will be replaced by repeats of CSI in the US but it is unclear what will become of the series on Nine, which is understood to have shelled out a considerable sum to screen the first US TV production for Jackman's fledgling Seed production company.

Jackman, who runs the company with wife Deborra-Lee Furness and producer John Palermo, was executive producer on the series and also starred in the show.

The show was based on the hit BBC series Viva Blackpool, about a gambler who opens a casino but winds up in the middle of a murder investigation.

It featured characters that sang - and sometimes danced - along to hit songs.

Critics were generally unimpressed with the series, which also failed to attract viewers.

In the end, even CBS appeared to distance itself from the show, mostly stripping promo spots of any mention of the sing-along gimmick.

Jackman had reportedly distanced himself from the project before it premiered.

Palermo last week denied Jackman was embarrassed by the series and said his lack of publicity for the show was because he was busy filming other projects.

"He's trying to balance a million things in his life - he's an amazing husband and family (man), he's got Wolverine and Australia," Palermo said.

"I don't really understand the reviews to be honest - there's always that chance of that when you produce something risky but we've got high hopes and the figures will speak for themselves."

CBS is still deciding what to do with the remaining episodes of Viva Laughlin but is considering streaming them online.

Steve Irwin's family watch him on DVD every day

Steve and Bindi Irwin / Megan Slade

TERRI Irwin has revealed she and her two children, Bindi and Bob, watch a DVD of her late husband every morning and have done so every day since his death a year ago.

The Crocodile Hunter's widow has also admitted she rarely visits Steve's top-secret grave site but plans to take her youngest child Bob there on his fourth birthday on December 1.

"I don't have to go where he is buried. He is with me all the time," said Terri, 43, who plays footage of Steve at breakfast every morning.

"Every day we watch a daddy video and while having breakfast and, for the kids, it's almost like he is still with us.

"We've got so much wonderful footage of Steve that he'll be a part of us forever."

She is set to release a book later this month entitled Steve And Me: My Life With The Crocodile Hunter.

Since her husband's death last year, Irwin has come under criticism for the gruelling publicity trail that both she and daughter Bindi, 9, have undertaken.

Rumours have also linked her with Steve's friend and manager John Stainton but Irwin has denied any romance in her life and said it was not even a consideration.

"Good luck with that," she tells New Idea, referring to Steve as a hard act to follow.

Body in suitcase sickens ambo

By John Lyons

IT was the way the little boy's body had been packed for death that most disturbed Mario Burzynski, an ambulance officer for 10 years.  In that decade, Mr Burzynski had seen many confronting things but what most affected him this time was the strangely deliberate way this boy had been packed in a suitcase. The child's legs had been folded back to fit into the suitcase and his naked body had been wrapped in plastic. "A kid who had drowned and floated would be a tragedy," Mr Burzynski said yesterday. "But this was very intentional. "This child had been compacted in to fit the space."

One thing locals in Ambarvale, southwestern Sydney, now realise is that in their midst has been - and possibly still is - an extremely sick, psychotic person. One mother, Kelly Martin, who went to view the crime scene yesterday, said: "I went to bed last night and got up three times to check that the doors were locked." This was an area already living with a level of anxiety.

Alert out on van for months

Local schools in recent months had alerted parents to beware of a man driving around in a white van with dog paw-print stickers on the back window who had been following children to and from school.

In an area of high unemployment, drug use and domestic violence, this duck pond provides a little sea of serenity. Ben Gallagher often brings his two young children here. "It's putrid," he says of much of the neighbourhood. "The area is full of drugs and drug dealers. "This lake is the place where you come to relax and feed the ducks." But as of 4.30pm on Wednesday, even the lake had lost some of its appeal, and the area's anxieties turned into real fears.
"After this I want them to empty the lake out," said Jay, the father of Jayden Atherton, the boy who discovered the body.

On Wednesday, Jayden and two other boys who had been hanging around the duck pond reached for sticks to drag a suitcase they'd seen floating to the side of the shore.
Having succeeded, they unzipped the case, but nobody was prepared for what came next - the boys let out a scream that one of the neighbours down the road heard.

Maz Humphry was that neighbour. She'd already been nervous about children playing around the lake following a high alert that had been given to local schools about a man in a white van following children home from school.
The scream on Wednesday sent a chill through her.

'We found a dead baby'

At first, the boys thought it was a pig's body, but on closer inspection, Jayden and his two friends realised it was a child, now believed to be between four and eight.
They ran for the nearest house, over the road, and found Sarah Burzynski and her father, Mario. "We found a dead baby," they shouted to Sarah through the security door. "Please come!"
Those were the first moments of the discovery of one of the most gruesome crimes for some time.
An extraordinary aspect of this murder is that no one has come forward to report a boy missing - suggesting the possibility of a parent being involved.

The body had been in the pond for about three days, and was beginning to decompose.
If you didn't know of the death, this would appear an idyllic setting similar to those found in suburbs around Australia.
But the ghost of this boy is already beginning to haunt those who live around the lake in Ambarvale, near Campbelltown.

Horror just beginning

The horror of this story is, in some ways, only just beginning. There is obviously a terrible story of depravity in who killed and packed the boy.  And there is its effect on the lives of others touched by it.

Sarah Burzynski, who opened the door to the three boys, had counselling yesterday and begins her HSC today.  Jayden Atherton, the 12-year-old who found the body, begins his first counselling session today.  His father, Jay, says that when his son came home after seeing the body, "he was wide-eyed and in shock" and had walked around the back yard for 10 minutes.
Jayden's mother, Jane Atherton, said: "Jayden seems to be okay - I think I'm handling it worse than he is."  One of the eerie aspects of yesterday's scene was the crowds who came to watch.

Crowds cause traffic jam

At one point, there was a traffic jam as everyone tried to get a look. Perhaps most disturbing of all was the thought that the person who would do this sort of thing may well return to the scene to check it out.  As mothers watched, they spoke openly of how they now won't let their children out of their sights.
One, Sue Bains, said: "If my kid goes missing for five minutes or his bus is late, I'm jumping up and down."  Another mother, Kelly Martin, spoke for everyone in the group when she made a reference to the boy in the suitcase: "Imagine the fear in that little boy's face."

Pedophile working for Hanson

By Steven Wardill

October 19, 2007 01:00am

SENATE-hopeful Pauline Hanson's latest tilt at federal politics has been dealt a savage blow with revelations she has knowingly allowed a convicted pedophile to work on her campaign.

Ms Hanson yesterday confirmed she was receiving volunteer help from Bob Dutton, who pleaded guilty in 2003 of sexually molesting two children about 30 years ago.

Concerned parents aware of Mr Dutton's criminal history told how the pair spent last weekend at a festival in Wynnum-Manly.

Ms Hanson campaigned at the festival under her latest political party banner - Pauline's United Australia Party.

But an unrepentant Ms Hanson said she was aware of "allegations" surrounding Mr Dutton but said she believed he may be innocent.

"I am totally against pedophiles, I have no time for them," she said.

"If I thought Bob was guilty of that I wouldn't have him around me."

She compared Mr Dutton's case to her own wrongful imprisonment, saying not all people found guilty actually committed the crime.

Mr Dutton, a former journalist with the now defunct Daily Sun, was sentenced to 3½ years' jail which was wholly suspended.

But he maintained his innocence and remained a member of the group known as Citizens Against False Sexual Allegations.

Mr Dutton, who admitted he would remain on the national child offender register until 2018, said he had committed no offence at the festival.

"I am not like that and I would never do anything like that," he said.

Mr Dutton said there was nothing wrong with him working for Pauline Hanson.

"I am a proper person to be helping anyone out to get into public office."

Child protection campaigner Hetty Johnston branded Ms Hanson naive for believing Mr Dutton.

Brisbane rents to increase by 30 per cent

Shannon Molloy | October 18, 2007 - 12:01PM

The tightening rental market in south-east Queensland is placing many renters under pressure, but one property analyst believes the majority aren't as stretched as it seems.

At present, the average price of a three-bedroom home in Brisbane is higher than Sydney and Melbourne, because they are closer to the CBD and facilities.

However Michael Matusik, from Matusik Property Insights, believes most renters have the ability to pay more.

And they had better - the average weekly price for a three-bedroom home is expected to rise 30 per cent over the next three years.

In Brisbane, rental vacancy rates have fallen to about 1.5 per cent as a severe undersupply of new residential developments continues to bite.

Renters in Brisbane currently spend about 27 per cent of their income on rent, with the average price of a three-bedroom house sitting at $290. In Melbourne the average price is $250, while in Sydney it's $280.

Mr Matusik believes the average rental price gap between Brisbane and other capital cities would begin to even out over the next three years as an undersupply in Sydney and a job boom in Melbourne point to rent rises.

Brisbane's new house stock is likely to be built some distance from the CBD and work centres, so the potential for rental growth is likely to be less than Sydney and Melbourne, he said.

He predicts the weekly median rent for a three-bedroom house in Brisbane could be as high as $375 by 2010.

It is the latest bad news for renters, who have been struggling with increasing prices and plummeting vacancy rates since the market began to dramatically turn three years ago.

Statistics released from the Real Estate Institute of Australia show a 25 per cent rise in residential rents across Australian capital cities in the past three years.

Back in 2004 vacancy rates for residential properties were close to four per cent and there was a slight oversupply of new housing across many urban areas.

With fewer new houses to be built over the next 12 months, in addition to an already low vacancy rate, the situation is about to get a lot worse.

But thanks to the changing habits of tenants, the next round of sharp rises isn't expected to hit for another year.

"We envisage that rental growth, however, will be a bit sluggish during financial year 2008 as renters absorb spare bedrooms and take longer leases," Mr Matusik said.

"There is evidence that tenants are starting to stay put rather than move, as shown by the decline in new bonds held across the country."

However he predicted rents would again boom in 12 months.

Intruder 'may have stalked family'

An intruder found in the bedroom of a five-year-old girl at Keperra early this morning could have been stalking the family for weeks, police say.

The little girl's 29-year-old mother disturbed the man when she was woken by a noise coming from her daughter's bedroom. The woman got out of bed and as she approached the girl's open door, a short distance from her own bedroom, she noticed a light on. Inside she was confronted by a man, believed to be in his 40s or 50s, who assaulted her before fleeing.

Detective Inspector Bob Hytch said the offender is believed to have fled the house on foot, via the front door, to a car in nearby Madsen Street.  Neighbours report hearing the sound of a speeding car, heading in the direction of Dawson Parade.  Police believe the offender had "done some preparation" before last night's break and enter, and want to speak to residents in the area who may have spotted a suspicious car in recent weeks.

The mother and child, who were the sole occupants of the Booker Street house, had only lived in the area for about six months.  Mr Hytch wouldn't comment on what the offender was doing when the child's mother found him, or how he entered the home in the first place.  He also wouldn't speculate on the possible motive, but said police had an open mind to all theories.  However he applauded the actions of the mother, and said she may have prevented the offender from carrying out his intended crime.

Today the child is being cared for by grandparents while her mother assists police.  The girl was not injured in the incident, and while the mother was assaulted, she did not require medical attention.  Mr Hytch said the woman was tired and "very shaken up".  She described the man as having a very thin, pointy face.  He was about 180cm tall and wearing a beanie and dark clothing.

Police have established a major incident investigation room to handle new leads.  Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Only in Australia

It is interesting that the federal government provides a single refugee with a monthly allowance of $1,890.00 and each can also get an additional $580.00 in social assistance for a total of $2,470.00.

A single pensioner who, after contributing to the growth and development of Australia for 40 to 50 years,  receives only a monthly maximum of $1,012.00 in old age pension and Guaranteed Income Supplement.

Maybe our pensioners should apply as refugees!

Let's send this to all Australians so we can all be ticked off and maybe we can get the refugees cut back to $1,012.00 and the pensioners up to $2,470.00 and enjoy some of the money we  were forced to submit to the Government over the last 40 or 50 years.

Please forward to every Australian to expose what our elected politicians are doing - to the over-taxed Australian.

Rudd, Howard do battle over worm

My thoughts: The election is coming. I will be voting Labor! However, I hate the
antics and mudraking the politicians do. Just get on with it boys and leave the games
at home! All we want is honest men to do an honest day's pay for us the tax payers.
After all, we do employ you! Why do they forget that!

Mr Howard... why do you think us "under dogs" are stupid? We have seen you line the pockets of your own party, and support the bosses... and now suddenly there is an election you are looking
out for us... oh come on!!! Oh Pleasssssse! We are not idiots! Mr Howard, I wont be voting for you! You are gonnnnnneeeee!

Rudd vs. Howard (Click for larger image.)

Wednesday Oct 17 19:13 AESTOpposition Leader Kevin Rudd is asking Australia to vote - for a worm.

Prime Minister John Howard and Mr Rudd have been bickering all week about the format and timing of the debates in the lead-up to the November 24 election.

The latest stoush is over Mr Howard's refusal to allow the television networks to use the so-called worm - a thin white line tasked with measuring audience reaction - during Sunday's leaders debate.

The prime minister went out of his way to explain that he was not anti-worm, but believes the creatures are best left in the garden.

He thinks the worm will distract viewers from the leaders' message.

"No I'm not scared of the worm, I love worms, they're very very valuable for your garden," Mr Howard quipped.

"But the point I make is this, the problem with worms in this context is that people look at the worm rather than actually listen to the arguments and that is the reason why a lot of people don't like it."

But Mr Rudd is backing the worm, and wants his supporters to express their admiration in a petition launched on his campaign website.

"Mr Howard is afraid to face the voters when he debates with Kevin Rudd," the Kevin07 website declares.

"He's refusing to allow the worm in, be a friend to the worm and sign our petition to let the worm in."

The petition is accompanied by a sad-faced cartoon worm and the slogan "Be a friend of the worm".

Last election, the worm was a friend of Labor, strongly favouring then-leader Mark Latham over Mr Howard.

"We are giving people the opportunity to formally register and put pressure on John Howard over the debate," a Labor spokesman explained.

"I think many Australians are fond of the worm even if the PM isn't."

The two leaders are still at a stalemate over the timing of the election debate.

Mr Rudd is demanding that three debates be held over the six weeks of the campaign.

But the prime minister says he will be in Parliament House's Great Hall at 7.30pm (AEST) on Sunday, even if he is doing all the talking himself.

While Labor has a commanding lead in the opinion polls, Mr Rudd was trying to claim underdog status on the debate battleground.

"I know I'm up against a clever, cunning politician who's been in politics for 30 to 40 years," he said.

"I go into this as a rookie, that's why I can't understand why he wouldn't have three."

Australia Idol news

The Idol judging panel Mark Holden, Ian Dickson, Marcia Hines and Kyle Sandilands. (Image supplied)

My thoughts: Is this just another stunt? Perhaps this is a ratings stunt. If they got people that had talent, I might go back to watching it. Im sure there are alot of others that feel the same way! Mark is just so fake, infact they all are! I cant stand that Kyle and while he is on the show there is no way I would ever watch it!

Marcia Hines has threatened to quit talent show Australian Idol after a series of angry comments on Sunday night's show.

The former Queen of Pop lost her cool in a fist-pounding burst on air, declaring she "had the s****" with fellow judge Mark Holden over his harsh criticism of contestant Ben McKenzie.

McKenzie, one of the most popular performers on the show, received the lowest number of votes after his performance of Stevie Wonder's Higher Ground.

Hines said Ben was "a shining light" and said "I don't think this is the end for you Ben."

"The travesty is you want to be here when there are certain people who don't want to be here, and that's what's really bugging me," Hines said.

Kyle Sandilands, another judge on the show, was also fuelling the fire while interviewing Holden on 2DayFM yesterday.

News Limited reports Holden did not hesitate to push the 54-year-old diva further to the edge — saying she should leave the show if the panel was scaled back to three judges.

"I'm leaving because I don't like being in company that don't (sic) like me, Mark," Hines told Sandilands after calling into his show.

Hines is seen as the mediator on the panel among brutal male judges Ian "Dicko" Dickson, Sandilands and Holden.

Hines is not the only one who has been disgruntled with Holden over his sharp tongue.

In August, the former King of Pop sought the help of police after a series of late-night phone calls sparked fears he was under attack from disgruntled contestants who failed to progress in the popular reality TV show.

''In an earlier season some cars were damaged by a contestant who would not take no for an answer,'' he told The Sunday Telegraph.
